Advantage Sunderland as Man United Lose Again

Advantage Sunderland as Man United Lose Again
LONDON (Reuters) - Sunderland gained the upper hand on Manchester United by deservedly winning their League Cup semi-final, first leg 2-1 to intensify the pressure on visiting manager David Moyes after a testing week. Italian Fabio Borini scored a second-half penalty to give the Premier League's bottom club a one-goal lead ahead of the return at Old Trafford after a 52nd minute Nemanja Vidic header cancelled out Ryan Giggs's own goal in first-half stoppage time. It was United's third straight defeat after they were beaten at home in the FA Cup third round by Swansea City on Sunday and by Tottenham Hotspur in the league the previous week, heaping pressure on Moyes in his first season in charge. The second leg will be ...

Xavi Criticizes Jose Mourinho

Xavi Criticizes Jose Mourinho
MADRID (Eurosport) - Barcelona midfielder and tireless critic of everything Xavi would once again like to remind you that he doesn't care for Jose Mourinho or the way his teams play football. And as an added bonus, he is even throwing in some criticism of Roberto Di Matteo's brief but successful reign at Chelsea. “Pep Guardiola is an important person for me - Jose Mourinho is a coach who focuses only on results,” Xavi told Panenka magazine. “He says he is ‘The Special One’ because he won this and that in so many countries but I do not like the way his teams play. “Who remembers the Inter side who were champions of Europe? For me, he has not left a legacy, unlike ...

Irving Back, Pacers Win 3rd in Row

Irving Back, Pacers Win 3rd in Row
CLEVELAND (AP) - The Pacers are making old-school basketball trendy, winning with defense, balanced scoring and strong second halves. Roy Hibbert scored 22 points and Lance Stephenson fell just short of his fourth triple double this season, helping the Pacers hold off Toronto's late charge for an 86-79 victory that allowed them to keep the NBA's best record. ''We didn't let them get physical with us,'' Stephenson said, referring to the stark contrast to Indiana's loss last week north of the border. ''That was a point of emphasis.'' The Pacers (28-6) have won three straight since that loss at Toronto and have a two-game lead over two-time defending champion Miami in the Eastern Conference. Cavaliers All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving is back in the ...

Cavs Acquire Deng in Deal for Bynum

Cavs Acquire Deng in Deal for Bynum
INDEPENDENCE (AFP) - With their season quickly sliding toward yet another trip to the NBA lottery, the Cleveland Cavaliers had to do something to slow their freefall toward irrelevance. They needed a scorer, a defender, a leader, and perhaps most importantly, someone to show their young players how to win. The Cavs acquired Deng, a two-time All-Star small forward with Chicago, early in a trade from the Bulls for Andrew Bynum, the enigmatic center whom Cleveland signed to a unique contract during the summer but recently dismissed for detrimental conduct. In Deng, the Cavs believe they're getting a multi-faceted player. Cleveland also gave Chicago a first-round pick from Sacramento, two second-round selections and gave the Bulls the right to swap first-round choices in 2015 ...

Euro Zone Unemployment Holds At Record High, Retail Sales Rebound

Euro Zone Unemployment Holds At Record High, Retail Sales Rebound
(Reuters) - Euro zone retail sales leapt in November even though unemployment remained at a record high, hinting at a pick up in consumer demand that would ease deflation worries and relieve pressure on the ECB to loosen policy. Data on Wednesday showed the biggest monthly jump for 12 years in retail sales, a proxy for household demand that has been weakened across the bloc by high rates of unemployment. The improvement came even though record joblessness persisted, with 12.1 percent of the bloc's labor force out of work for the eighth month in a row in November. Data on Tuesday had shown a surprise drop in euro zone inflation to 0.8 percent in December, well below the European Central Bank's target of ...
